Abstract

Academic probation is an intervention program to help at-risk students overcome their academic struggles and attain academic success. This narrative inquiry aims to explore the college survival stories of five former academic probationary students and their motivation in persevering in their studies. The themes that emerged are Causes for Failing, Experiences during Academic Probation, and Motivation. The common causes for failing are family problems, peer pressure and vices, and poor health conditions. The common experiences during their academic probation are counseling and follow-ups, and monitoring of academic performances. The common sources of motivation are family, awareness of being monitored, encouragement from school official, earning a diploma or degree, and God. Although the probationary program needs improvements in its implementation, the participants valued its interventions and considered them essential to their academic success.
